About the Shine House
The Shine House is a nonprofit community arts center located in the heart of downtown Somerset. Our goal is to provide the community instruction in a variety of visual art forms: painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, and object art.
We currently have five certified yoga instructors to lead and educate the community in body movement and relaxation art forms: yoga, meditation, and breathe work
This creative educational space has been developed with inclusion in mind.
The Shine House idea grew from the vision of a place where all would feel welcome. All would be welcome regardless of age, educational level, ability, disability, artistic knowledge, current or past life situation. This vision sparked a partnership with Chris and Tina George and ABA, Applied Behavioral advancements. Chris and Tina George believe in people and their community. Through this partnership the Shine House has branched our relationships with the Adult Training Centers in our area. Meeting people through these centers has been a gift.

Art is what puts the living in life. The swish of a color, a single mark or multiple marks, a photograph capturing the perfect moment, a body light as air dancing spinning spinning spinning, a string of words that makes my heart flutter, sounds of music made by an instrument or vocal cords. All these pieces of art, and so many more make my soul light up. Even more enjoyable than the art you know you will see is the art that takes you by surprise. Turning a corner and seeing, hearing, being part of something unexpected. Life is beautified, fueled, excited, motivated, calmed, enraged, healed, and lived through art. Physical movement is art. Combining breath, action, and expression with the physical self, that is art. Art and movement of the body is a gift, however it is performed, however slight or grand.
I’ve been making art my whole life, from about age five is when I can recall my creative processes. Art is the thing that is more than the mundane. I make art often through painting, multimedia, textiles, and jewelry making. I create art when I move my body, expressing myself through physical movement. I have been teaching yoga and art to many abilities and ages since 2011. I am also a forever student. Learning and sharing art forms is a life goal, and an opportunity at The Shine House. I’ve shown and sold art, multiple times, but that isn’t what art is about to me. It is the process, the creating, the emotions stirred when I move my body, my hands in creation, my breathe, my soul. When those things are united that is the truest art form for me. I learn through experimentation, and I have an associates degree in the arts, but technique is not what I am concerned with. Combining skill and soul, that’s what makes art. I hope to teach, learn, grow, share, experiment, heal, breathe, and most importantly be part of an arts community at The Shine House. I hope you will join me.

Tara Helser studied the art of Printmaking and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.
She is influenced by many artists but favors Paul Klee and Henry Matisse. She relates heavily to their use of shape, line, and color.
A mother of five children, Tara has continued to expand and pursue her education in the Arts and in Teaching. Through her private studio she has empowered pupils both privately and in group sessions, to explore and develop their own creative talents.
Tara has a background in dance. She studied jazz and tap for ten years and was a member of The Lancaster Ballet Company in Lancaster, Ohio. It is this love of dance that encouraged her love of movement. She is now a certified teacher in yoga and pilates, having trained under the beautiful and talented Jenny Williams of Someret, Kentucky.
Excited and motivated to share her knowledge in the fields of visual arts and movement with her community, Tara is also very eager to learn from her community. She sees The Shine House as the great facilitator for both!
Iris Miller is from Lancaster, Ohio where she graduated from William V. Fisher Catholic High School. She moved to Somerset, Kentucky four years ago.
